Main Problems with the Class:
We’re expected 2 hours of work outside for each credit hour of a class. The daily discussion questions/readings already push that limit. This alone was an obnoxious task, and realistically half the class copied/paraphrased the first 4 to do the assignment. It’s just painful, it’s why you start seeing only 4 people in the class doing them by the end. It was just exhausting trying to do all of that.
Unfortunately, 70% of the readings in this class take more than 2 hours to read. This is without even doing the discussion question. I’m in the part of the class that did most of them, but got burnt out in the end. This is just one aspect of the class.
One Thing that I did find helpful:
I like the idea of a presentation to help give a visual and expand upon what we are reading. Realistically, this is just making one out of the many exhausting days 3 hours of additional work. This class feels like we are trying to jam pack all of Bootism into one TINS.
Can’t Be Too Positive 😀
We had to write 5 essays over the course of the semester. 2 of them requiring over 5 sources. Outside of the works cited, the final is 10 pages long. A midterm, a pop quiz, a blog, a reading literally each day and 2 debates. This class has the audacity to tack on a requirement to attend 3 TINS events that somehow relate to Bootism. Then give 3 journal entries about them. They’ll be lucky if I could figure out the date for ONE TINS event in general.
I walked into this class knowing I’d hate it too. Just from how he described it to us on the first day, and the syllabus. I literally go to other classes drained just from being in this class. And it is the first class of my day. I only stayed because it was one of the only TINS available at the time.
Now I will probably do my best to not take any other classes with Brockhurst. It’s awful hearing that another professor teaches the course. It’s a thousand times better and how it’s their favorite class.
Well this is the most painful class I have taken ever, in my life. And I realistically only have 4 classes. With this in mind, I’m somehow failing 2 other classes, because of how awful this one class is in it’s expectations and busywork and.
I’ve had to tell people that it’s a 50/50 on whether they want to take it. Consequently, because they heard everything I had to say about the course, they dropped it immediately.
What Has To Change:
There is a complete overload for sources in terms of the final and even just the blog draft. We have to find specific texts about Bootism(10 for final), but we have to heavily annotate them. We already have a massive amount of readings we’re unable to draw upon for the blog or final. The standards for this class are already 4 credits, realistically pushing 5 outside of the classroom itself.
Take out 2 of the essays, leave the blog and final, keep the presentation. Completely abandon discussion questions entirely, give us more time to write for debates. Reduce the number of sources needed for all of the essays that require them. All of that and this could possibly be a tolerable 3 credit TINS, and it’s really pushing that if even. I honestly don’t know what to do to make this class great other than reinvent it entirely.
A kid outside of the class had to report you, Brockhust, for doing too much. That in itself should say something. Now if you’ll excuse me I have some more Booty Linguistics to fail. >:(
Thanks for listening.
